( ENSPIRE COMMUNITY ) Raleigh, North Carolina Gets A Taste Of Haiti!
What do you get when you bring together Raleigh, NC, amazing food, live music, a great cause, and did I mention amazing food? You get A Taste of Haiti Cultural Celebration hosted by Haitian Kitchen, the very first Haitian food delivery and catering service in Raleigh, NC lined up to begin in January 2017.
As a born and bred New Yorker I am accustomed to finding a plethora of different food choices. The opportunity to cruise down the street and be engulfed in a cultural exchange such as that offered in New York isn’t always as easy to find in the south. So you can only imagine the joy that came over me when I found out about Haitian Kitchen’s Cultural Celebration.
The event was held at The Vault in Durham, NC and the house was packed. Performers such as Rhody Paul, Leslie Audrey and Haiti Dance Troupe all showed up and out to entertain the audience. Vendors offered their services as raffle prizes to those who attended and the host Dafney Tales-Lafortune shared her passion for proper representation of the Haitian Culture.
As you know the island of Haiti has been through catastrophic earthquakes, hurricanes and recent slanderous remarks made by a weather meteorologist that caused an uproar. During these tragic events often times people will only associate a culture with the bad things they hear. Though there are issues of poverty in the island of Haiti, there is plenty of history and rich culture that doesn’t get represented.
A Taste of Haiti Cultural Celebration highlighted the beauty and strength of Haiti with live music, cultural art, dance, and incredible fresh Haitian cuisine!
Haitian Kitchen Co-Founder Dafney Tales-Lafortune had this to share about the amazing future of Haitian Kitchen: “Haitians take pride in everything we do, especially our food,” she said. “It’s important for us in North Carolina to showcase our culture in a positive light and the best way to do that is through our food…Each month Haitian Kitchen will offer four to eight freshly cooked entrees to be delivered weekly.”
You can do your part to ensure their success by donating to their GoFundMe here (Raleigh’s First Haitian Restaurant) and following them on social media!
