Appreciating culture, exposing the whole hearted desires of giving back to one’s country to help its socio-economical, economic growth, and health are just a few of the gems created by the Miss Nigeria USA pageant. We were privileged to cover the third annual Miss Nigeria USA 2017 at the Schomburg Theater in Harlem, NY. It was a night of excellence, acknowledgment, love, and education. Founder, Joy Fakhoury and her team strive to use their platform to highlight and promote the rich cultural values of Nigeria to the U.S. and global communities. Miss Nigeria USA platform allows young women who show dedication, demonstrate self-confidence, beauty, intelligence, and elegance.
All of these women were competing to support causes close to their heart that can aid their home country. This pageant uses its platform to address specific issues to the audience and media to get a grasp on the specific dilemmas the country is facing that is of particular interest to each of the contestants. Health concerns, domestic violence, and personal hygiene are a few of the topics the contestants are working to make a difference on. What would be an international beauty pageant without its team of internationally known judges? Judges included Wura Kolawole also known as Miss Wu is a hair professional, educator, entrepreneur and former beauty queen; Efe Tommy is a seasoned TV/Media personality, Public Relations consultant, and style blogger; Isaac O. Babu Named by Forbes Magazine as one of Africa’s Best Young Entrepreneurs Under the age of 30 in 2013; Millen Happiness Magese is a world-renowned fashion model and humble humanitarian; Ty Hunter is celebrated as one of the world’s most influential fashion gurus. Let me not forget to mention the hilarious, gut clenching hosts Miss Ayoladey aka Naija Mother and Liz the International Diva aka Mama Sade. They did a wonderful job keeping the audience entertained and the audience involved.

After a series of events that included swimwear, talent contest and evening wear; the final six competed in two rounds of questions related to holding the title and what good work they will do using their platforms. The crowd was really into this pageant as when the final three was announced the theater filled with family and friends screaming names of who they wanted to win. The final three contestants were Miss Ondo State, Miss Akwaibon, and Miss Lagos.
After the final deliberation, Miss Akwaibon was crowned Miss Nigeria USA 2017. From a spectator point of view, it was not easy for the judges but they made a great decision. We are excited to see how MIss Akwaibon will use her reign as Miss Nigeria USA 2017 to make an impact in the betterment of Nigeria. And congratulations to the runners-up and all the contestants who participated in this years pageant.
