VH1’s Hip-Hop Honors will pay tribute to one of the greats of comedy, Martin Lawrence. In tandem with honoring the 90’s and these “Game Changers” Billboard reports that the ceremony will pay tribute to victims of Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath.
This year will be the first time that the award show diverges from celebrating iconic musical acts and instead will focus on the impact that the 90’s had on the culture. This coincides with Lawrence‘s hit sitcom, Martin hitting its 25 year milestone anniversary. The sitcom was a breakout hit that ran on Fox network from 1992 through 1997. “Anytime anyone wants to recognize you for your work, it’s an honor. I am looking forward to a really great night of fun and music,” says Lawrence in a statement to Billboard. The comedian has had a plentiful career across the board as a huge name in comedy and some movies. To his credit, his name is well known throughout most of the 90’s era and generations now can still be apart of that.
The two past two years the ceremony paid tribute to the women and southern natives who left their impact on hip-hop culture. This year VH1’s hip-hop honors’ is shaping up to be a real all-encompassing tribute to a great era in music, television, and film. Regina Hall will be hosting the Hip Hop Honors, featuring a performance by Missy Elliott an honoree of last years event. You can tune in to watch VH1’s Hip-Hop Honors: The 90’s Game Changers on September 18th at 9 p.m. EST on VH1.
